I have found another draft site that allows you to mock draft your favorite team’s selections. The first site that I used last year and up to this point is called firstpick.com. This other one that I might start using is called fanspeak.com/ontheclock. I think the site does a decent job in selecting players for the other teams. Sometimes it makes a strange decision or two per round but for the most part they will select the higher rated prospect and player that makes sense to the team. There is no trading allowed. So unfortunately for you guys out there that want to stockpile as many picks as possible you are stuck with your team’s current selection. Both sites do updates on Tuesday. I think fanspeak does theirs around noon and firstpick is in the evening.
I think when you go about making a mock draft for your team and in this case the Atlanta Falcons, you need to make some assumptions on free agency. Because it has not happened yet and we do not know officially who is going to be resigned and released it is up to the mocker to announce what needs are met in free agency so as to allow the reader to ascertain what needs are left and why you made the picks you did.
So for this assumption I am going in that we did make the cuts of Asante Samuel, Stephen Nicholas and the like. We do not cut Osi and Steven Jackson. And we resign Robert McClain, Mike Johnson, Joe Hawley and Corey Peters. And then let Peria Jerry and Babs test the free agent waters. The only free agent moves made were to bring in a DT and RG say Linval Joseph and Geoff Schwartz. Personally I would prefer to cut Osi and add a free agent DE that is in his prime and still draft one pretty high but I am not sure if the Falcons want to add 3 big free agent signings.

Mock Draft 1
Round (Pick) Pos, Name-School (Big Board Ranking)

1(6) OT, GREG ROBINSON – AUBURN (7)
2(37) TE, JACE AMARO – TEXAS TECH (23)
3(68) DE, KONY EALY – MISSOURI (37)
4(99) DT, WILL SUTTON – ARIZONA STATE (63)
5(135) RB, MARION GRICE – ARIZONA STATE (94)
6(166) DT, RYAN CARRETHERS – ARKANSAS STATE (173)
7(197) OG, SPENCER LONG – NEBRASKA (254)

In this mock draft Clowney and Matthews were already picked so I would like to have traded down if possible. But it’s not allowed so I have to pick where I am at. I did not feel comfortable picking Khalil Mack or Anthony Barr this early and I did not want to take Robinson here either. If I could, I would like to have traded down to a team like Minnesota or Tennessee, a team that could be looking to trade up to draft a QB that might have dropped or a WR like Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans. If we picked up an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder that would really help out.
I ended up taking Greg Robinson because he is a young man that has great potential. He is a devastating run blocker and his pass blocking may need some work. He was not asked to pass block in the traditional sense that often so it has been hard to judge. He could work at RT for a year or two then hopefully develop into our blindside protector for Matt.
In the 2nd I had a tough decision. There was several ways to go. I could have selected a DE or DT that would have been good value. If I went with an OL it would have been a significant reach because the top guys had already been selected. I ended up going with a guy that can help ease the transition from Hall a Famer to a very talented guy that dropped a little.
In Round 3 I again stop a guy from falling. Ealy was a guy that I almost picked in Round 2 and if I almost pulled the trigger in Round 2, how could I say no, one round later? Ealy is a guy that has flashed immense potential. He is a guy that has all the tools and measurables, he just needs some coaching and time.
In the 4th I got another guy for the middle of our defense. Sutton has been an explosive player coming off the line of scrimmage and can help spell Peters in the 3-tech and can help push the pocket.
In the 5th I get a young guy that can help shoulder the load and try to keep Jackson fresh down the stretch and possible replace him heading into the next offseason.
In the 6th a big man to help stop the run by occupying blockers and allowing our LBs to run freely.
In the 7th I could have gone a few different ways. I thought about a kicker to replace Matt Bryant, a fullback to replace Bradie Ewing but I decided that giving a chance to a guy that was rated as one of the better interior OL guys before his injury would be a good gamble. Give him the opportunity to heal and learn before possibly taking either Justin Blalock’s or Schwartz’s spot in 2015.

Mock Draft 2
Round (Pick) Pos, Name-School (Big Board Ranking)

1(6) OT, GREG ROBINSON – AUBURN (7)
2(37) DE, KONY EALY – MISSOURI (37)
3(68) G, GABE JACKSON – MISSISSIPPI STATE (77)
4(99) DT, DAQUAN JONES – PENN STATE (89)
5(135) TE, TROY NIKLAS – NOTRE DAME (110)
6(166) DT, RYAN CARRETHERS – ARKANSAS STATE (173)
7(197) OG, SPENCER LONG – NEBRASKA (254)

Again in Round 1 Clowney and Matthews were off the board so I kept this pick the same. I think Robinson has some serious potential and without being able to trade I have no problem nabbing him here.
Unfortunately, this time there was not anyone that was significantly falling so I decided to add talent to the pass rush. I almost took Hageman but decided that with Peters and Joseph already starting and both being in their primes that I need to add some serious talent to the outside of the DL that really only has Massaqoui as the young pass rusher.
In the 3rd I reached slightly to grab a G that could pay dividends and help solidify our OL. Just in case we decide to cut Blalock because of salary or Schwartz does not perform well after signing, Gabe is our insurance.
In the 4th I grabbed a guy that could help sub in at both the 1- and 3- tech spots and has some skills.
In the 5th I grabbed a guy that is not the fastest but is a solid run blocker and can help this offense out as a security blanket.
I kept Rounds 6 and 7 the same because I think at this point of the draft you are looking at either special teamers, guys with extreme potential, guys with injuries, or guys that have only one tool and need time to work on others. I like my two guys and think if given a chance and proper coaching that could become contributors.

I like both drafts. In the first draft I would have liked to get an OG earlier but the value was off so I did not reach for one and I think I did a good job filling the other holes. I had a lot of players drop a ton to make it work but sometimes the unexpected happens and people drop. For the second mock I do not know that I can complain too much. In the first four picks I think I really help out on both lines and got guys with really good potential.
