There has been some going ons with the Braves since they signed B.J. Upton to the 5 year deal.
The Braves did trade SP Tommy Hanson to the Angels for RP Jordan Walden. The move deepens the depth of the bullpen while clearing not only payroll but the 5th spot in the starting rotation for presumably either Randall Delgado or Julio Teheran if neither is traded for LF. The spot will eventually be filled by Brandon Beachy later in the season when he returns from Tommy John surgery.

The Braves also resigned OF Reed Johnson. This deal gives the Braves a right-handed option off the bench and a guy who can play all 3 outfield positions.

Earlier in the offseason they resigned SS Paul Janish but have also signed IF Ramiro Pena to a one-year deal. The switch hitter has experience playing mostly the left side of the infield but has played a few games at 2B. Janish is not expected to be available for the first few weeks of the 2013 season and Pena and Janish are also not expected to be on the roster at the same time. Pena is out of options while Janish is not so it will be interesting on how this plays out next year. Also this muddles things up for former starting SS Tyler Pastornicky who could be traded or spend next season at Triple-A Gwinnett.

The Braves also sent out a front office contingent to the Dominican Republic to evaluate several players including 3B Juan Francisco who has slimmed down at the Braves’ request.

The Braves main concern for next year is what to do at LF or 3B depending on what position Martin Prado does not play.
