Ending weeks of speculation, Miami decided to forgo participating in the postseason for the second straight season. The announcement, made Monday, appears to be another attempt by the university to prevent further ineligibility down the road. The Hurricanes also self-imposed a bowl ban for the 2011 postseason.

So instead of this coming weekend’s action deciding who will win the beleaguered ACC Coastal division, the race gets decided by Miami’s announcement. Georgia Tech, once thought dead in the water this season, will now play Florida State in the ACC Championship Game. While the Yellow Jackets’ win total isn’t enormous, there will still be plenty of fan interest in the game, with a large contingent expected to travel up from Atlanta to Charlotte to attend.

Of concern for the ACC is also what this does to the bowl pecking order, and its collection of bowl eligible teams. As of right…
